rock
At the ends of the promontories, the rock-art demonstrates further patterning. The majority of images are concentrated in easily accessible and visible locations at the base of each promontory, where they are at the level of the wadi. In addition, a smaller collection of images is situated at the uppermost tip of the promontory, directly above the lower images. These locations are obscure and difficult to access. They occupy a very different landscape context from the engravings at the base and are positioned with commanding views over the wadi. Deliberate partitioning of the rock-art at the promontories between two contrasting 'types' of landscape suggests that there may have been exclusive access to certain images and the information they represented, which may also have been enhanced by the different types of landscape in which they were placed. Differential access to knowledge through manipulation of space may have provided a mechanism for intellectual control and may have been an important source of power and status affirmation.
